Safe Streets Austin

Our friends at BikeAustin.org merged into the new organization called Safe Streets Austin. It's a movement to transform Austin’s streets, bikeways, and trails into safe, vibrant, and equitable places for people of all ages and abilities to walk, bike, roll, and gather. From group rides to advocacy, there are lots of fun & meaningful ways to get involved.

BIKE INDEX

BIKEALOT partners with BIKE INDEX to register every bike we sell for free as a service to our customers. Anyone can register their bike for free here. BIKE INDEX is an excellent international open source database of bikes and their serial numbers to help recover stolen bikes while protecting owners' privacy. We love their mission and encourage you to check them out.

How to NOT buy a stolen bike

Our friends at Bike Index also created an easy PDF guide outlining 4 simple steps anyone can follow when buying a bike online to make sure they don't accidentally buy a stolen bike. Price too good to be true? Bike doesn't fit the seller, or s/he has 20 bikes listed and won't tell you the serial number? "Frankenbike" of mis-matched parts? Think twice!

Austin's Yellow Bike Project

Yellow Bike Project is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that has been working since 1997 to get more bikes on the streets of Austin by operating community bike shops, teaching bike mechanics and maintenance, and acting as a local bike advocacy group. Their popular "earn-a-bike" program has empowered countless Austinites to learn the basics of bike maintenance and repair by volunteering with the Yellow Bike Project, in order to earn their very own bicycle. They also accept donations of bikes and parts, and they welcome anyone who wants to learn or help. Does it get any better than this?!

We are happy to help you with major repairs and customizations, but we're also here to help empower Austin's cycling community to enjoy the art of bicycle maintenance at home. You can always shop with BIKEALOT for any tools or parts you may need.

The Greenbelt Story

Do you love riding, hiking, and swimming in the Greenbelt? We do! The Barton Creek Time Stream interactive website shows you the fascinating story of how the creek, the springs, and our Greenbelt have been protected by courageous citizens as Austin has grown. The stories of generations of Austin's environmental heroes are spellbinding and inspiring! Follow the links to some great short films, and the artistic interactive map will blow your mind & maybe even help you choose a swimming hole.

Rethink 35 Logo

Rethink 35

Join Austin's grassroots movement fighting the proposed I-35 expansion to 20+ lanes through Austin. Has Texas learned nothing from the Katy Freeway fiasco in Houston? More lanes = More traffic.

14 other Texas cities re-rout through traffic on I-35 around city centers. Austin could too! Just imagine how a boulevard could enrich and reconnect our community instead of further dividing and polluting Austin with a MASSIVE expansion of I-35.

Check out this great article from Inside Climate News about the pending lawsuit to stop the I-35 expansion since doing so would inevitably exacerbate climate change and harm our public health.

Follow this link to sign the petition and this link to get involved in the movement to Rethink 35.

Menchaca Rd Bike Plans

BIKEALOT worked with the City of Austin Mobility Planners to incorporate bicycle infrastructure into the Menchaca Road Corridor project. The photo shows the 8 foot wide shared use path coming to Zone 2 of the corridor, which is where our shop is located. Separated bike lanes are planned farther south where Menchaca Road is wider. Follow the link below to see the full plans and sign up for city updates as construction continues. If you join BIKEALOT's email list (at the bottom of this page), we'll let you know when opportunities arise for public comment on bike infrastructure.

Marin Museum of Bicycling

If you're ever in Northern California, this non-profit museum is a must see! Their amazing collection shows the evolution of modern biking, starting with historic bikes from the 1800's and taking visitors through a fun & fascinating look at how mountain biking blossomed in Marin County. For avid bike enthusiasts or history buffs, they have a mind-blowing collection of books, periodicals, and ephemera. Their friendly staff loves giving guided tours, so call ahead to make arrangements. We were honored to get a tour from living legend, Joe Breeze!
